Can ChatGPT see your website?
Enter your website. In a few seconds you will see whether ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Copilot and Perplexity can reach your site, read it and understand what you do — in plain English, with what to fix.
Two kinds of AI crawler, and why it matters which you block
“Block AI” sounds like one switch. It is two, and most websites that flip it lose the one they wanted to keep.
Training crawlers collect pages to train AI models: OpenAI’s GPTBot, Anthropic’s ClaudeBot, Common Crawl’s CCBot, and Google-Extended for Gemini. Blocking them is a legitimate choice about how your writing is used, and it does not stop you being found.
Search crawlers are how AI answers find you in the first place: OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot — and Googlebot and Bingbot, whose indexes Google’s AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot draw on. Block one of those and that engine cannot read your pages, so it cannot recommend you, however good they are.
The check reads your robots.txt the way crawlers are required to: each one obeys only the section that names it, the most specific rule wins, and a robots.txt that errors tells every crawler to stay away from the whole site.
What the check looks at
- Can AI search reach you? Which search and training crawlers your robots.txt allows, and whether the page tells search engines not to index it.
- Can AI read the page? Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your homepage’s words are filled in by scripts, they may see an almost empty page.
- Does the page say what you do and where? A clear title and description, a main heading, and structured business details (schema) with your location and your profiles elsewhere.
- Can search engines find everything? A sitemap, and a canonical address so copies of a page do not compete.
What it cannot see: blocking done by your host or by a service like Cloudflare before robots.txt is read, and whether you are actually in Google’s or Bing’s index — only they can see that. There is more on finding out what assistants say about you in how to find out what ChatGPT says about your business, and on why ranking in Google is no longer the whole picture in SEO is not enough for AI search.
Questions people ask
Why can’t ChatGPT see my website?
Usually one of three things, and this check looks for the first two. Your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT search uses — often through a blanket rule or a plugin setting nobody remembers turning on. Your text is filled in by JavaScript, so the crawler sees an almost empty page. Or a firewall at your host or Cloudflare turns AI crawlers away before they reach your site, which only those settings will show. If none of these applies, ChatGPT can see you; whether it mentions you is a separate question, answered below.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from recommending my business?
No. GPTBot collects pages to train OpenAI’s models. ChatGPT’s search uses a different crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and blocking that one is what keeps you out of its search answers. You can block training and still be found — many sites block both by accident.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
Google says Google-Extended controls whether your pages are used to train Gemini, and does not affect your inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews are part of Google Search, which uses ordinary Googlebot.
Why does my site look empty to AI crawlers?
Most AI crawlers read the HTML your server sends and do not run JavaScript. If your site’s text is filled in by scripts after the page loads — common with some website builders and app-style sites — the crawler may see an almost empty page. The fix is to deliver the text in the HTML itself.
Can this check see if Cloudflare or my host is blocking AI crawlers?
No. Some services block AI crawlers at the network level, before robots.txt is ever read, and that cannot be seen from outside. If this check passes and you are still not being found, check your host’s or Cloudflare’s bot settings.
Does passing this check mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
No. It means nothing on your site is stopping AI search from reaching and reading you. Whether you are recommended depends on what your pages say, how clearly, and what the rest of the web says about you — which is the work of AI search optimisation.
Is anything I enter saved?
No. We fetch your homepage, robots.txt and sitemap, show you the result, and keep neither the address nor the result. The only thing recorded is an anonymous count of checks, to stop the tool being misused.
Not affiliated with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic or Perplexity. Crawler names and what each company says they are for were checked against their own documentation in October 2026.
