AI search optimisation: appearing when buyers ask an assistant
More buyers now start by asking an assistant instead of searching. We make sure it describes your business accurately, and names you when someone asks who they should call.
What that includes
- We check what ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot currently say about you
- Pages written to be quoted as the answer, not just ranked
- Your name, address and details matching everywhere they appear
- Your information written so machines can read it without guessing
- A monthly check on how the assistants are describing you
Questions we get asked about this
Is this the same thing as SEO?
Related, but not the same contest. Assistants cite sources that are specific, consistent and easy to extract, and research puts fewer than one in ten of the pages they cite in Google’s top ten for the same question. A business can be quoted by ChatGPT without ranking, and rank without ever being quoted. The industry is settling on generative engine optimisation (GEO) or answer engine optimisation (AEO) as the name for it.
How would I even know what ChatGPT says about me?
By asking it, which is where we start — the questions your buyers would actually type, run across the main assistants, with what comes back written down. It is usually the most uncomfortable and most useful part of the first month, because the answer is often that nothing comes back at all.
Why does being in Bing matter for ChatGPT?
Because that is where ChatGPT looks. Its search retrieval runs through Bing’s index, and Copilot is Bing outright, so a page Bing has never indexed cannot be cited no matter how well written it is. Most businesses have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools, which is why this is cheap ground to take.
